Intrigued with the structure of the bustier, I made Caution (2015). I anticipated the sexual read since a bustier leaves much of the skin uncovered, and is most associated with showcasing cleavage. Embracing this cultural artifact for what it is, I chose to incorporate unconventional materials—powder blue vinyl panels with plastic caution tape piping. I felt that plastic as textile places emphasis on appearances and spectacle. Plastic is showy both in materiality and in cultural association. Although I felt that Caution was more successful than Flannel Tops, I suspected that sexual objectification would still prevail over inverted objectification.
