I discovered that I could not make feminist work without researching and addressing the gender binary. With such strong male-coding, variations on the neck tie offer countless, fascinating interpretations. Gender Ties (2015) are made from a mix of recycled denim, plastic grip textile, and burlap. I experimented with several presentations, but ultimately landed on the arrangement in the photo below. The juxtaposition of the “male” necktie hung like a noose over a female dress form challenges the gender binary.
