Jackets for Coffee (2015) is a series of stylish wraps designed to clothe styrofoam coffee cups. Made from recycled men’s shirts, the wraps are lined and maintain some of the original, practical shirt details such as buttons and pockets. Although the Styrofoam cup subject matter reads gender-neutral, I combined female adornment with the female action of sewing—thereby experimenting with a gender-coded critique.

I chose recycled men’s shirts for their humanizing effect. Empathy is an overarching theme in my work because our world seems to suffer from a deficit. I believe that ascribing human qualities to objects cultivates and strengthens empathy in human beings.
